Every year, future college students visit multiple campus to see whether it’s a place they want to spend the next years of their life. The campus may or may live up to their expectations, depending on the prospective student’s wants and needs. What is of importance to one student is probably not top priority for the next.
Current college students were asked what their dream campus would be like. The students interpreted the question in different ways, creating some interesting answers.
“What is your dream campus?”
Adriana Reardon is a sophomore, art studio major and commuter at SUNY Potsdam.
“My idea of a dream campus would be a small college. People wouldn’t be prejudiced against those they found different than them. A dream campus would have clubs and events for everyone to be involved with, not just those that are convenient for students that live on campus. As a commuter, I’d want a campus that doesn’t ignore their commuters and helps cater to their needs instead — or rather a campus that caters to the needs of their students in general, not just their own monetary gain.”
Mel Bruno is a junior, public relations major at SUNY Plattsburgh.
“If I could describe my dream campus, it would be in San Diego, where the weather is always just right. Right near the water so at night I can listen to the waves crash as I try to fall asleep. Beautiful flowers and trees surrounding extravagant brick buildings. All dorm rooms would be singles so students can have privacy and independence. There would be an array of classes that covered topics from around the world. There would be music and clubs at night with a nightlife that would just make you feel welcomed into the community. The food would be fresh and healthy with some not-so-healthy options that are always delicious. The town that surrounds the campus would be beautiful and safe with families that are welcoming and kind. The professors would be caring and always try to help their students in any way they could. The grading would be based on students and how they learn, not one grading system for the whole class because everyone learns differently. That’s my perfect campus if I could have it any way I wanted.”
Nick Chadwell is a junior, theatre major at SUNY Potsdam.
“A student’s dream campus is a campus where their creativity and curiosity can flourish. A place where they can develop new ideas and create in a world that is completely new and ever-changing, full of multiple experiences. The dream campus is a place where your imagination runs wild and you develop new ideas and challenge existing ones. It’s a place where you can be 100 percent real, (a place where) you’re free to take your ideas and passions and bring them to life.”
Dellandy Christian is a junior, business administration major at SUNY Plattsburgh.
“I feel like I would want my dream campus to be more remote than SUNY Plattsburgh. I would prefer on-campus housing that would have a cabin feel, with 10 people in a house. The professors would be more involved with the students and have more group communication. The campus would have an Adirondack-style, with activities that would include camping, biking and hiking. Instead of multiple dining halls, there would be one dining hall and a large campus grocery store so students could make their own food. The meal plan could include money to spend at the grocery store. With this, it would be helpful to also offer cooking classes so students can learn an important life skill.”
Olivia Gonia is a freshman, psychology and art major at SUNY Potsdam.
“My dream campus would be one that genuinely cares about the students. It’d be a smaller college but still have enough of a variety of classes to keep things interesting. Foods (would include) options for vegetarians, vegans and any other dietary needs. An overall ‘good’ meal plan would be desirable. The meal plans at college are often pricey and there’s not much room for customization. Students are individuals, and to a certain extent should be able to have choices for what they want out of their experience. A campus with flexibility in their majors and minors (i.e. being able to combine majors, or slightly alter one to create a new major/minor) would be difficult, but it’d be very beneficial to the students.”
Tianna Smith is a junior audio/radio production and communication sciences and disorders major at SUNY Plattsburgh.
“My dream campus would have warm weather all year. It would be a mid-sized campus near the beach. It would include people from many different racial backgrounds and the school would focus on the arts. Majors would include music, art history, theatre, photography, dance and different styles of drawing/painting. There would be no classes added to majors that are irrelevant. All pets would be allowed on campus and going to the school would be free. There would be many internships available through the school and the school would also offer post-graduate job placement.”
Sarah Durant is in her second year of a two-year social service work program at St. Lawrence College.
“I guess my dream campus would be a nice small classroom setting where it’s easy to interact with both the professor and the students. Good food that’s not expensive and just an open minded community with little to no discrimination. College is where many people find themselves, so having the safe place to find and express yourself is crucial.”
The dream campus comes in many different forms for college students. However, most answers had one thing in common: The dream campus would not discriminate.
And of course, you can’t forget the good food.
