Looking for a quick pick-me-up snack? Protein energy bites will become your new best friend. They are a protein-packed breakfast or snack!

Not only are they easy to make and require few ingredients, but they can also be customized to any liking. These healthy morsels are loaded with healthy fats and fiber to keep bellies full all day long. Below is a great base recipe for energy bites that can be whipped up in under 10 minutes. This recipe only requires five ingredients that might already be in the pantry. The best part is no oven is required.

Julia Annunziata, a senior at SUNY Plattsburgh, makes these every other week. “Energy bites are perfect for a quick snack or breakfast for on-the-go people. They are so easy to make and are great for the rest of the week. Also they taste amazing with coffee.”

Ingredients Needed:

⅔ cup of peanut butter

½ cup of dark chocolate chips

1 cup of old fashioned oats

½ cup of chia seeds

2 tablespoons of agave nectar or honey

Instructions:

  1. Simply place all the ingredients together in one bowl and stir to combine. Place the mixture in the fridge to cool for 10-15 minutes to make them easier to roll.
  2. Roll a tablespoon-sized ball of the mixture. The mixture usually makes around 12 bites.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week and enjoy!VideoToGif_GIF

* Pro-tip: Add a nonstick spray to the measuring tools before adding in the honey. It comes out much easier. *

Any substitutions can be made to this recipe. Try adding almond butter instead or add in some shredded coconut flakes for an even sweeter taste. Peanut butter is a great source of healthy fats. Make sure to get an all natural and organic peanut butter with only a few ingredients. Chia seeds also contain high amounts of fiber and omega-3s. They taste even better when frozen. “I’ve been a big fan since day one and I highly recommend,” Annunziata said. These energy bites are gluten-free and vegan (most grocery stores sell vegan chocolate chips). Give this recipe a try!
